Oklahoma City YMCA Downtown Campus

After FSB’s renovations, it’s fun to stay at this YMCA.

When the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed in April of 1995, it damaged many downtown structures, including a nearby YMCA which had been providing fitness and youth programs to the local community for more than 60 years. In the wake of the disaster, the facility was determined to be unsafe, and the decision to rebuild was made. Fortunately, the agency was able to obtain a site a mere two blocks away, conveniently located between two major east-west thoroughfares and adjacent to the Oklahoma City YMCA’s corporate offices.

For the new facility, YMCA management wanted to celebrate two distinct factors – the agency’s long history in the area and its role in the burgeoning revitalization of downtown Oklahoma City. FSB’s team worked with them to make both of these goals a reality through the use of dynamic curves, extensive natural lighting and durable materials to create a visually appealing building that presents a vital and vigorous image to users.

One of the most attractive elements of the new facility is a sky-lit gymnasium featuring multiple dividable basketball and volleyball courts, with a three-lane elevated running track stretching around the perimeter. A mirror-lined aerobics room features cushioned wooden floors and a complete sound system, while aquatic workouts are facilitated with a four-lane lap pool. Workout rooms contain state-of-the-art equipment, along with multiple television screens. The facility also contains a whirlpool and sauna/steam rooms.

Child care is provided in a separate supervised area. Basic elements including a reception desk, locker rooms for men and women, and restroom/shower facilities also are incorporated into the project. A common vehicle drop-off area and adjacent commons area are accentuated by a sweeping covered canopy, providing dramatic curb appeal as well as protection from the elements.
