C-130 Aircraft Hangars and AMUs

Specially designed, two-bay hangars made it possible to house and repair every variety of C-130 aircraft.

Space limitations made it difficult for staff of Cannon Air Force Base’s 27th Special Operations Aircraft Maintenance Squadron to meet the maintenance demands of its C-130 planes, meaning new facilities of the appropriate size and configuration were necessary for the maintenance of the aircraft assigned to the base.

The FSB team served as the A/E of Record for two (2) two-bay heavy maintenance hangars with attached administrative, training and support spaces for two aircraft maintenance units (AMUs). While each C-130 aircraft hangar was primarily designed to accommodate two AC-130H aircraft, horizontal and vertical clearances within the hangars were determined based on the dimensions of all C-130 aircraft currently utilized by the Air Force Special Operations Command to ensure the hangar could effectively house all aircraft in the AFSOC fleet.

The C-130 aircraft hangars were designed to accommodate aircraft in both the nose-in and tail-in configurations and include internal low-bay support spaces and storage cages. These provided maximum efficiency and flexibility and allowed for full bridge crane coverage of the aircraft. In addition to office space and ready rooms, the AMUs contain specialized rooms for combat-oriented supply operations support, debriefing, meetings and conferences, lockers, showers and CAMS/IMIS. Space was also allocated for a weapons shop and Dash 21 shop. In addition to the two hangars, an aircraft parts and Mobility Readiness Spare Packages (MRSP) warehouse was added to support C-130 aircraft operations.
