Oklahoma State Capitol Dome
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
For 85 years, Oklahoma’s State Capitol had remained unfinished. Over the years FSB worked with various state officials and Governors on plans for the Dome. In 1998, FSB was retained by the State to perform a feasibility study to determine the viability of constructing a dome. Based on the study’s sound approach Governor Frank Keating and the Oklahoma Centennial Commission announced on July 25, 2000, plans to construct a dome as part of the state’s Centennial celebration efforts.

Since designing and building a dome on an existing Capitol had not been done in the U.S. since the Nation’s Capitol in 1865, this project was every architect’s dream. The challenge was to complete it with today’s materials, within budget, on a tight schedule, under intense scrutiny, match it as close as possible to the original building and also incorporate state history.

In partnership with Capitol Dome Builders (a joint-venture of Manhattan Construction and Flintco, Inc.) FSB designed and engineered both an external and inner dome. Based on very limited design intent from 1914 architect Soloman Andrew Layton, FSB created a new dome consisting of precast concrete and cast stone soaring 155 feet above the Capitol. The inner coffered dome is constructed of cast gypsum panels that feature a design symbolizing Oklahoma’s rich Native American history.

The interior color scheme symbolizes the state’s rich Native American history and features colors that depict the state wild flower, “Gaillardia,” commonly known as the “Indian Blanket.” An original design for the new stained glass artwork was created incorporating a stained glass interpretation of the State Seal, and features a new color palate that harmonized with the inner dome design.

At the start of the project the design team did extensive historical research that was later used in the overall design to weave the past and present together in an Oklahoma tapestry of the State’s rich 100-year history. The result is a project that celebrates Oklahoma and its people and one that will be enjoyed by future generations of Oklahomans.
